A Closer Look at CNA Careers

When many people hear the phrase Certified Nursing Assistant (also referred to as as CNA), you likely think of a nurse assistant working in a rest home for the elderly. Although there are many areas in the medical field where a CNA can utilize his or her talents, the most likely place of employment is in a nursing home. While you may be familiar with this profession, just what exactly is a Certified Nursing Assistant?

The Certified Nursing Assistant is an individual who helps with the day-to-day treatment of these needing medical care. However, this is simply a brief explanation of this dynamic and complex profession. See this website for more information.

Those who first enter this profession are often confused as the first job duty is not dispensing medication, checking vital signs or accepting physician requests. It’s about learning to listen to your  patients and truly caring for their daily needs. This element of a Certified Nursing Assistant is the cornerstone of this profession as well as a critical element to the successful treatment and rehabilitation of patients.

By way of example, the Certified Nursing Assistant who spends the majority of their shift caring for a patient might be the very first to detect an alteration to the patient’s health. This awareness, or observation, is imperative for the entire nursing process as a CNA is often the first in line to notice a response (either positive or negative) in a patient.

But what other areas of employment can a certified nursing assistant work in outside of a nursing home? CNAs can also be generally called on for home care, or home visitation. Generally, patients who require this level of service are elderly individuals or those with handicaps that have trouble executing day-to-day jobs. The Certified Nursing Assistant can assist patients in a variety of methods, such as feeding, bathing and dressing.

Universities and even children care centers, such as elementary schools and daycare, also use certified nursing assistants to provide basic-level care. Although certified nursing assistants within these areas don’t perform the same duties as a physician or registered nurse, they often utilize their knowledge to assist in minor health problems and educating students on healthier habits. Often times, a CNA in this setting works alongside a registered nurse or a licensed practical nurse. A certified nursing assistant in an educational setting, such as at an elementary or middle school, often assist other healthcare providers to administer and control the outbreak of specific conditions, such as lice or ringworm.

CNAs might also function in rehabilitation facilities. While physicians and registered nurses may do the actual treatment, a CNA generally spends more one-on-one time with these specific-type of patients. Oftentimes, it is the personal level of interaction a CNA delivers to rehab patients that becomes a fundamental piece of the healing process.

Information About Preparing for CNA Training

Embarking on the journey to become a CNA is a wise decision, and it considered by some to be a very rewarding career, but it’s also very important to prepare yourself for optimal success, and if you’re ready for your training, you’ll get the most out of it in the end. Typically, most CNA training programs last a matter of months, and are taught at community college and private training centers, however they may last longer depending upon your state regulations, and other various factors*. You don’t typically need a lot of preparation for these classes in terms of prerequisites, but you may need to have a high school diploma, or at a minimum, a GED in addition to other possible requirements.

In addition to having your education squared away, you may also need to have your immunizations taken care of. This is important because you’ll often be working around people who are sick or carrying disease, and you don’t want to get sick from that. Also, you don’t want to get anyone else sick either, so you’ll need to be tested to tuberculosis and a few other diseases in order to make sure that you aren’t spreading a disease to someone who is already sick. You may also need to pass a physical, and provide a health history depending upon where you live and the requirements there.

Once you have your education and health requirements taken care of, you’ll need to make sure that you’re mentally prepared to start CNA school, and that you understand what a serious commitment it can be. This doesn’t mean that it’s going to be too hard for you, it just means that like any other academic pursuit, you need to take it seriously and really buckle down with your studying in order be successful. A lot of people don’t give any thought to preparing their minds mentally for school, and when they don’t do that, they often limit their success. The point here is that since you’re spending time and money on your training classes, it’s wise to take the time to get yourself in the right frame of mind. If you don’t do this, you may find it easy to slack on things and it’s possible that you could fail, or at a minimum not retain the information very well, which could lead to you not being prepared for the state certification test that comes after you pass the class. As long as you focus on school, eliminate distractions, take your classes seriously, and work hard, you’ll be on your way to becoming a great nursing assistant.

Is CNA Training Available Online?

Let’s face it: computers are a big part of our everyday lives, and that’s not going to change anytime soon. Because of this, it’s natural to wonder about how this translates to education and schooling. If you’re someone who’s looking at taking CNA training classes, you might be in luck (depending upon where you live). The fact of the matter is that some states do allow students to take some CNA classes online, but the most important word there is “some.” See, you can’t take all of your CNA courses online because that’s prohibited, but you can, in some states, take the lecture section of your classes over the internet. The lecture section refers to the textbook more often and is basically the “book learning” section of the class.

Like you may have imagined, people still need to be in class in person to take the hands-on part of the class. You might be thinking “Well, I am on the internet all the time and it’s a great tool for learning, why can’t I just take the entire class online?” If it’s not already obvious, you can’t take the entire class online because you need to be there in person to physically do some of the things that they are instructing you to do. This way, you can develop the proficiency in the techniques by repeating them over and over, which is the best way to learn.

The obvious benefits of taking your CNA training online are a flexible schedule and being able to learn in the comfort of your own home. If you want to, have the freedom to attend class when it’s convenient for you, then online classes are the only way to go. If you want to have the freedom to sit in the comfort of your own home while you’re learning, then again, online classes are the only way to go. The only bad part here is that you need to find out whether online CNA classes and training programs are available in your state, because that’s not always the case.

One final thing to think about when it comes to online classes, is that you need to be someone who is good at independently learning, and someone who can stay motivated and focused without someone else pushing you. If you’re someone who has trouble with these things, you might want to consider going the more traditional route and taking your classes in person where you are face-to-face with a professor who can keep you on task for the lecture portion of your class. However, if online classes seem like a good idea and they’re available to you, it might be worthwhile to try them and see if it works out.

Who Makes More Money: a CNA or an RN?

It’s important to start off by saying that how much money you earn in a job doesn’t define you or make you better or worse than anyone else. You wage or pay rate does not define your worth as a person, nor does it mean that your job is somehow more important than someone else’s job. With that said, there are a lot of people who are considering going to school for a medical career that wonder about the difference in pay between a CNA and an RN. There are a lot of similarities and differences between the two, and because of that people often get confused.

When it comes to pay there is a substantial difference, but it should be noted that disparity also comes at a price for an RN, which is extra time in school. According to Think CNA Online, RNs can make about twice as much money (either per hour or in a salary), as CNAs in most states. But the time that it takes to become an RN is typically much longer than the time it takes to become a CNA. This means that a CNA could be out earning money while an RN is still in school. One of the most common things that some people may do is get their CNA license first, and then see how they like the job. If they do like it, then they can work as a CNA while attending school to be an RN. This is essentially a best of both worlds approach, and it works well for a lot of people.

CNAs typically spend a matter of months in school (although this can vary depending upon where a person attends school as well as local regulations), where RNs can spend two to four years in order to get an associate’s degree (two years) or a bachelor’s degree (four years). Some RNs may even opt to pursue their education further and get a master’s degree in nursing. This extra education, combined with the fact that RNs can work in private practice and other settings that pay more, lead to higher wages overall. Again, this doesn’t mean that it’s not worth your time to be a CNA, as many RNs get their start as a nursing assistant. Both careers are also very similar in the fact that they are very rewarding, and do a lot to help other people. Regardless of which career you choose to start or end up in (even if it’s neither one), as long as you are happy with your work, happy with your pay, and doing things that help other people, you are setting yourself up to be prosperous and feel good about your choice.

What Kind of Person Makes a Good CNA?

With all of the different career choices to pick from, it’s obvious that different people are good at different things, and not everyone is suited for every career. This couldn’t be more true when it comes to the nursing profession, and it’s something that people need to stop and think about before blindly jumping into nursing (or any career for that matter). In order to be a good, effective nurse, you need to be someone who’s analytical, detail-oriented, and can make quick, accurate decisions. You also need to be someone who is patient, caring, and empathetic towards other people. Patients who are not feeling well or struggling with their illnesses, really depend on nurses in order to lift their spirits and also provide them with the care they need. These patients aren’t always the nicest, they can be grouchy or angry, and nurses need to be able to cope with that while still providing great care.

This takes a special kind of person to be able to do this, and not everyone has these qualities. In the same way that some people are extroverts, where others are introverts, there are people who have the personality traits to be great nurses, and others who don’t. There are some signs that can help your understand which category you fall into. For example, if you tend to have little patience with people, and are quick to anger, you might not be the best for a nursing career. This doesn’t mean that you are a bad person or anything like that at all, it just means that your personality traits might not be the best match for nursing. You might be a brilliant research scientist, and your research could benefit thousands of people, but you may not be the best fit for a nursing career.

It’s important to take the time to look at your personality and think about what your strengths and weaknesses are so that you know what will make you the most happy, and where your talents will shine the most. When you take the time to think about these things, you’ll be able to come up with an idea of what type of career you should pursue. In the end, you want to make sure that you’re happy and that you don’t have to end up switching careers a number of times before you find something that you like. That can lead to wasted time and progress, so if you take the time to do your research and spend time thinking, you’ll be setting yourself up for success.
